WATERLOO REGION (April 13, 2018) – On Thursday the District 8 Senior Badminton Championships were held, and it was the Woodland Cavaliers who captured the senior and overall team titles.
HaMin Kim and Eli Visscher took home the gold medal in the boys doubles event as they bested their Cavalier teammates, Nicholas Hamming and Jesse Isaacs in the final match. Carson Wright and Alex Amaral would take the bronze for Monsignor Doyle.
The girls doubles gold medal went to the St. Mary’s team of Rhaea Visto and Zipei Shen. Dilara Sen and Alliyah Rowe won the silver medal for Père-René-de-Galinée while the Monsignor Doyle pairing of Erin Hermer and Nicole Laskus took home the bronze.
Monsignor Doyle did take gold in the mixed doubles with the team of Tienna Pinto and Joshua Grasso. They edged past Rockway’s Emma Ruby and Kean Snider who finished second. Woodland’s Nicole Hellinga and David Boonstra won the bronze medals.
In the singles division, Yoaren Liang won the gold in the boys category for St. Benedict’s while Kristian Kopic from Resurrection won silver and James Carr-Pries from Rockway won bronze.
Resurrection’s Erin Wang won gold in the girls singles category as she topped Woodland’s Sydney VanderHoef in the final. Avery McLeman from Monsignor Doyle took the bronze.
Woodland only finished two points ahead of Monsignor Doyle for the senior championship title.
On Wednesday the Junior championships we decided and Rockway also won that team event by two points over St. Mary’s.
With the junior and senior points combined, it was Woodland who finished in first with 117 points followed by Monsignor Doyle with 109, and Rockway with 108 points.
All first and second place finishers will advance to the CWOSSA championships held April 18th (junior) and 19th (senior) at the Columbia Ice Fields in Waterloo.
