WATERLOO REGION (February 20, 2019) – Over the last eight years the senior boys basketball championship has seesawed between two basketball powerhouses, St. Benedict’s in Cambridge and St. Mary’s in Kitchener.

On Tuesday night in front of a packed house, it was St. Benedict’s who regained control of the title, and will advance to the triple-A CWOSSA championship this Friday.

Throughout the first half the Saints maintained a steady, yet slight lead which was helped to be established by 12 first quarter points from guard Ben Mascarenhas.

Heading into the third quarter with a seven point lead, the Saints defence buckled down holding the Eagles to only two field goals and seven points in the third quarter.

St. Benedict’s Justin Ching nailed a big three-point shot at the buzzer to end the third quarter to swell the Saints lead to 16 points.

Saints’ grade 12 forward Aidan Whalen went on an unforeseen tear in the second half scoring 19 of his game high 22 points as they finished with a 66-40 win.

St. Mary’s Paolo Malacad scored a team high 12 points while Eric Martin added 10.

St. Benedict’s will open their CWOSSA tournament in Kitchener against the winner of Wednesday’s WCSSAA qualifying game between Grand River C. I. and Kitchener C. I.

In the Junior Championship, it was Resurrection beating St. Benedict’s 59-45 to claim their first junior boys basketball championship in nine years.

The Phoenix Nate Chan and Shiloh Worthy scored 15 and 13 point respectively, while Saint’s William Buffong had a game high 23 which included five made three-pointers.

Resurrection will host triple-A CWOSSA round robin play on Friday with their games scheduled for 10:30 A.M. and 7:30 P.M.

The ‘Midget’ basketball championship went to St. Benedict’s as they squeezed past Resurrection 49-46 led by 12 points from Anthony Ceccomancini.

District 8 will be voting to rename the ‘Midget’ division in June at the association’s year end board of directors meeting.
