D8 CROSS COUNTRY: Eagles fly to claim overall team title

WATERLOO REGION (October 20, 2017) – In convincing fashion, the St. Mary’s Eagles boys swept all boys team awards as well as snuck out a one point win for the overall championship edging out Resurrection on Thursday’s Championship at Bechtel Park.

The Eagles were led by grade 12 Marcus Kemp who finished the six kilometer race with a time of 20:31:65. He was joined on the podium by his grade 11 teammate Foster Malleck who was last year’s junior champion, and captured the silver in his first year racing senior. The bronze medal went to Kyle Bociort from Père René de Galinée.

The top senior girl on the day was Eliza Smith from Resurrection. She, along with teammates Kara Hughes, who finished fifth, and Morgan Riddell who finished sixth, took the senior girls team title. Rockway’s grade 11 runner Claudia Heeney won the silver medal, while Nikki Soares took the bronze medal.

Woodland Christian High School won their first team title in cross country since 2012. Their title on Thursday in the junior girls division was based on the third, fourth, fifth finish from Caitlin Shepherd, Elissa Gibson and Carmen Duimering respectively. Abby Yuhasz from Resurrection won the individual gold, while St. Mary’s Judith Paulokwir won the silver.

Not only did the St. Mary’s boys sweep the team titles, the junior boys also swept the podium. Thomas Fitsum took the gold with a time of 19:14:94 in the five kilometer race. His teammate Nathan Kemp finished with the silver six seconds later, followed by Adam Loffelmann with the bronze 12 seconds after that.

Lucas Bociort from Père René de Galinée took the gold medal in the midget boys 4 kilometer race followed by St. Mary’s Graham Nicholls and St. Benedict’s Luke Meadus.

The midget girls race was won by Monsignor Doyle’s Alex Hankins who won by a full minute. Emily Dodge from Resurrection took the silver another full minute ahead of St. Benedict’s Brianna Zakrzewski who won the bronze.

The overall girls title ended in a tie between Resurrection and St. Benedict’s.

The CWOSSA Championships will take place Thursday October 26th at Bechtel Park in Waterloo, followed by OFSAA Championships on Saturday November 4th in Petawawa.
