WATERLOO REGION (October 18, 2024) – On Thursday at the District 8 cross country championships in Waterloo, St. Mary’s was the big winner, taking sole possession of the combined team title, girls’ team title, but needed to share the boys’ team title. For the first time ever, the District 8 boys’ overall championship was split three ways between St. Mary’s, Resurrection and St. David’s.
Resurrection swept the podium and won the team event in the senior girls’ race, led by gold medalist Sarah Edwards, who finished with a time of 24.16. Edwards’ teammates Teagan Gawne and Paloma Prin collected the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
St. David’s Landon Reuter three-peated in the senior event collecting gold for the third year in a row, recording a time of 19.37 in the six-kilometer race. Andrew Corbeil from Monsignor Doyle won the bronze and helped the Mustangs win the senior boys’ team title for the second straight year. James Porto from Père-René-de-Galinée collected the bronze.
The junior boys’ race was won by Resurrection’s Nathan Mesquita who finished 21-seconds ahead of silver medalist Xander Fulop from St. Mary’s. Fulop helped St. Mary’s collect the team championship for the Eagles, along with teammates Adrian Lofaso who won bronze and Jordan Barradas and Max MacKinnon finishing sixth and ninth, respectively.
Micah Carswell from Père-René-de-Galinée crushed the junior girls race winning by more than two minutes. The silver medal went to Megan Klapwyk from David-Saint-Jacques who also helped her school win their first cross country team title, just one point ahead of Père-René-de-Galinée. Carswell’s teammate Bella Renaud won the bronze medal.
St. Mary’s Lola Topper won the gold medal in the novice girls race with a time of 17 minutes flat in the four-kilometer race. Ella Sharratt won the silver medal and helped lead her Woodland team to the novice girls’ championship. St. David’s Caitlin Gawel took the bronze medal.
The gold medal in the novice boys’ race was won by Jacob Schubotz from Père-René-de-Galinée. He finished just ten seconds faster than St. David’s Elijah Parry who took the silver and helped his squad win the team title. Jackson Linseman from St. Mary’s won the bronze.

District 8 schools will now race in the CWOSSA Championships being held on October 24th in Simcoe Ontario. Winners will advance to the OFSAA Championships being held November 4th in Ottawa.
