WATERLOO REGION (October 20, 2016) – For the second straight year in the District 8 championship match, the Resurrection squad had to fight for every inch if they were going to retain their title against a tough St. David’s team.

Both St. David’s and Resurrection have been undefeated throughout the D8 season, each tallying four wins and tied each other twice.

Wednesday’s final started with an up and down pace which lead to Resurrection scoring with the ball bouncing around in the St. David’s circle. Sammy Dietrich from Resurrection ended up getting a stick on the ball and giving the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.

With a number of opportunities to score were closed off by outstanding goalkeeping from both Marley Dowling of St. David’s and Janelle Ward of Resurrection, the game stayed 1-0 for much of the time.

With eight minutes left in the match, Resurrection’s grade 10 forward Sara Steinfield potted the second goal which was followed up only 75 second later by Celtic’s captain Kristen Straus who answered back with a goal of her own.

In a 2-1 deficit, the Celtics used their late goal momentum to try and tie the game to push it to overtime, but the tough defensive play from Resurrection and outstanding goaltending from Ward were too strong.

Resurrection will now look toward CWOSSA Championships, October 26th and 27th at Woodside Park in Kitchener. This tournament is one of the hardest roads to qualify for OFSAA, as a CWOSSA entry has won the last six OFSAA championships, five by Resurrection and one by WCSSAA’s Sir John A. MacDonald.

OFSAA will also be held in Kitchener-Waterloo, at Woodside Park and RIM Park, November 3-5, 2016.
