WATERLOO REGION (October 17, 2019) – On Wednesday afternoon at Woodside Park in Kitchener, St. Mary’s looked to defend their District 8 title against Resurrection.
Resurrection controlled the pace of play earlier in the first half and had four short corner opportunities but could not convert.
Shortly after Resurrection’s fourth short corner, St. Mary’s Lauren Mader escaped on a breakaway capitalizing on the opportunity, scoring the first goal of the game.
Later in the second half Gillian Rovers scored her sixth goal on the season increasing the Eagles lead to two.
With less than five minutes remaining Resurrection’s Avery Davis scored to narrow the deficit to one goal, however the Phoenix couldn’t level the score before the final whistle.
With St. Mary’s winning the Field Hockey CWOSSA Championship in 2018, provided an extra entry for District 8 so both St. Mary’s and Resurrection will advance to CWOSSA.
St. Mary’s will open their tournament against the WCSSAA champion at 9:30 AM on October 23rd, while Resurrection will open against the D10 champion at 10:45 AM, both taking place at Woodside Park. Both teams hope to advance to the semi-finals at 10:00 AM on October 24th.
