WATERLOO REGION (October 18, 2018) – After ten long years, the St. Mary’s Eagles have regained the District 8 field hockey title over Resurrection on a cold Wednesday evening at Woodside Park in Kitchener.
Ella Murphy who led the league in scoring, notched the only two goals of the match with only a few minutes left in the first half.
Much of the play was in the Resurrection end as the Eagles maintained momentum throughout the game. Resurrection’s goalkeeper Janelle Ward had an outstanding game stopping many Eagle scoring opportunities.
In the Eagles net, Rachel Zmigrodzki was largely untested on the day and tallied her fourth shutout of the year.
Other than Resurrection, St. Mary’s was the last team to win the District 8 field hockey championship which happened in 2008. Resurrection’s nine year championship run in D8 accounted for five CWOSSA and five OFSAA championships.
St. Mary’s will now look to add their name to the list of CWOSSA champions for the second time, as they haven’t won that particular title since 1979, the inaugural year of field hockey in CWOSSA.
CWOSSA will take place October 24-25 at Woodside Park in Kitchener where St. Mary’s will be placed in a pool with the D10 champion and WCSSAA’s runner up.
