WATERLOO REGION (November 11, 2024) – On Friday night in front of a packed grandstand at Warrior Field, Resurrection was able to stave off a hungry St. Mary’s High School, to win their third straight District 8 senior football title.
Teshawn Telfer for the Phoenix, and Mackenzie Sutherland for the Eagles, each scored touchdowns in the first quarter to knot the game after 12 minutes. Resurrection’s Andrew Melo scored early in the second, and Teshawn Telfer scored again to give the Phoenix a two-touchdown advantage in the second frame.
Just before half, the St. Mary’s defence forced a huge turnover, and Mackenzie Sutherland was able to punch in another touchdown to bring the game within a single score at the half.
With no more scoring until late in the fourth, St. Mary’s offence turned the ball over on downs, giving Resurrection great field position. Three quick passes later and Chace Austin found himself in the endzone giving his squad a 28-14 advantage, and the school’s third senior football title in as many years.
Resurrection will now advance to the CWOSSA semi-final where they’ll meet Guelph’s Centennial Collegiate at the University of Guelph, November 14th at 6:00PM.
In the junior football title, St. Benedict’s looked to knock off Resurrection who entered the playoffs as the top seed. The Phoenix led 14-6 late in the fourth frame on touchdowns from Deiondre Nguyen and Colton Duguay.
With only minutes left, the Saints’ offence marched down the field and tied the game with a touchdown run from Aiden Zoleta and Josh Emery punched in the two-point conversion, forcing extra time.
In the shootout style overtime, St. Benedict took the ball first and Josh Emery scored to give the Saints a 21-14 lead. Resurrection turned the ball over on their attempt, sealing the championship for St. Benedict, and winning the title for the second time in school history.
