WATERLOO REGION (December 17, 2024) – On Tuesday, District 8 announced that Mackenzie Sutherland from St. Mary’s High School was named the Father Mike, Most Valuable Player in senior football.
Sutherland, a Grade 12 running back, led the Eagles to their first senior football title appearance in school history, scoring 13 touchdowns in eight games. His impressive stat sheet shows more than 1600 yards carrying the ball, averaging more than 200 yards per game with no fumbles.
“Mackenzie was instrumental in leading the Eagles to their first District 8 championship game and demonstrated both a hardnosed and agile running style,” said Kyle Armour, St. Mary’s head football coach. “He was named a team captain and demonstrated excellent leadership skills throughout the season. Off the field, Mackenzie is an honor roll student and has set a few CPF powerlifting records over the past three years.”
Joining Sutherland as first team all-stars on the other side of the ball are defensive back Gabe Lopez, linebacker Joey Lusk and defensive lineman Mike Onaiwu-Osayi.
The Eagles second team all-stars all shined on offence; quarterback Michael Perciballi threw two touchdowns each to wide receivers Vince Dubien and Levi Lichty while being protected up front by lineman Simeon Ashnaki.
Resurrection three-peated as District senior champions in 2024, with a high-powered offence that scored an average of 31.7 points per game based on the play from the dynamic trio of first team all-stars, quarterback Austin Adair, running back Andrew Melo and wide receiver Teshawn Telfer. Phoenix linemen, Aidan Conway and Kelvin Sok played both ways and were also named to the first team.
Three Grade 12 players were named as second team all-stars from Resurrection: defensive back Alex LeDuc, lineman Michael Nan and linebacker Ryan Putzu.
Ethan Ryan scored two touchdowns for St. Benedict in his District 8 campaign, earning a first team all-star nod. As did teammate, Grade 12 offensive lineman Jordan Lacroix.
The Saints also had one of the best defences in the league, allowing less than two touchdowns a game with outstanding play from second team all-stars, linebackers Jef Collins and Cade Rees, and defensive back Faraz Latif. Quarterback Stephen MacDonald averaged more than a touchdown a game for St. Benedict, earning himself a second team all-star nomination.
Grade 12 first team all-star quarterback Owen Schill found the endzone twice for St. David’s. Teammate Marcus Maxwell played both ways as linebacker and running back and was named to the second team.
