WATERLOO REGION (December 18, 2024) – It was announced on Wednesday that the award for most valuable player in the District 8 senior girls’ basketball league would go to Grade nine guard Nina Erak.
Erak helped lead the Woodland Cavaliers to a triple gold medal season, winning District 8, CWOSSA and the first OFSAA basketball title in the school’s history.
“Nina had an outstanding season for Woodland,” said Woodland’s head coach Stu Julius. “She played the point like a veteran even though she was only in Grade nine. She started every game and was a major factor in taking us to the gold medal game at OFSAA . She could score, but more importantly she made everyone else better on the floor.”
Erak loaded up the stat sheet along with teammate, and 2023 league MVP Kalee Chapman, who was again named a first team all-star in 2024. Woodland’s Grade 11 forward Bree Drost was also named as a league first team all-star for the second straight year, while Grade 11 Emma Tonin is making her senior all-star debut on the second team.
First team all-star Stacy Tran helped St. Benedict to a District 8 silver medal as a Grade 12 guard, while teammate Julia Vasquez was named to the second team.
Naveen Angelo, also a Grade nine point guard, was named as a first team all-star from St. Mary’s leading the Eagles in scoring, averaging 19.0 points in 11 games. Elizabeth Urosevic, was named to the second team as a Grade 10 guard for the Eagles.
Ella Bradnam was named as a second team all-star, as she led the Rockway Flames in scoring as a Grade 11 guard, while Natalia Duarte was named to the squad from Resurrection.
