WATERLOO REGION (April 3, 2018) – On Tuesday, District 8 announced the most valuable player award in girls hockey will go to St. Mary’s Julia Spitzig.

Spitzig led the Eagles to the first District 8 series final since the league’s inaugural year in 2015-16 where they collected a silver medal. St. Mary’s went on to win a silver medal at triple-A CWOSSA championships which earned them a birth into the OFSAA championships.

Spitzig was the loan grade 12 student-athlete selected as an all-star in girls hockey. Her grade 11 teammates, Madeline Schroder who plays defence and Lindsay McIntyre who is a forward were also named as first team all-stars.

St. David’s also had three players named as first team all-star selections including goaltender Mikayla Schnarr who was unbeaten in D8 action as the Celtics collected a District 8 gold medal. Schnarr in the strong District 8 league was unable to record a shutout, but eventually got one in the semi-final of CWOSSA double-A Championships.

Schnarr along with fellow first team all-star selections Chloe Davidson and Emma Mulhall went on to win the double-A CWOSSA championship, and collected a bronze medal at the OFSAA championship.

With Schnarr, Davidson and Mulhall, along with St. David’s second team selections of Lex Schneider, Olivia Bolender and Maddy Bourque all being in grade 11, it would be safe to say this team has a shot to make noise next season.

Resurrection’s Rachel Buttinger split time between playing right wing and defence this season, and was named as a first team all-star. Fellow Phoenix, Louise DeAndrade was named as a second team all-star.

St. Mary’s also had grade 11 defender Taylor O’Kane and grade 10 forward Ella Murphy named as second team selections.
