WATERLOO REGION (June 25, 2024) – District 8 announced their all-star rosters from the girls’ soccer season on Tuesday, with Resurrection’s Mckenna Campbell-Turkalj named as the league’s most valuable player.
The grade 12 midfielder led the Phoenix to their second District 8 soccer title in as many years. In the District 8 final, Resurrection topped St. Mary’s 5-1 with Campbell-Turkalj scoring one goal and being named player of the match.
“She is a great leader on the field, offering support and guidance to younger players while maintaining her commanding presence in center midfield,” said Resurrection’s coach Nora Wessely when asked what earned Campbell-Turkalj the MVP nomination. “Her ball sense and vision on the field is excellent, making smart plays and setting up other players for success. Her amazing attitude during practices also makes her a fantastic player to have on the team.”
Campbell-Turkalj is off to the University of Northern Illinois on a full scholarship in 2024-25.
Resurrection also named grade 12 midfielder Danielle Bortmes as a league all-star as she helped the Phoenix collect the triple-A CWOSSA Championship in back-to-back years. Resurrection tallied a 18-3 goals differential with the only goals against coming in a 4-3 semi-final win over District 8’s St. Mary’s. Campbell-Turkalj scored five of those 18 while Bortmes added two.
At the triple-A OFSAA Championship, the Phoenix placed second in their group and won their quarter final, finishing with an OFSAA fourth place antique bronze.
Grade 12 defender Mya Brodrecht and midfielder Sophia Bruni were named as league all-stars for silver medalists St. Mary’s after they proved to be a top team in District 8 and CWOSSA.
Père-René-de-Galinée battled from a winless regular season to a quarter-final upset where they were edged out by Resurrection. All-stars Annick Larivière and Selma Enns helped les Chevalières to a single-A CWOSSA silver medal.
Monsignor Doyle’s Talia Machado, a grade 10 forward, lit up the scoreboard in the D8 season scoring 14 goals in seven games. She is joined by teammate Molly Owen who is making her third straight appearance on the District 8 soccer all-star roster.
Sarah Ceballos scored three goals in her District 8 campaign and helped St. David’s to a double-A CWOSSA semi-final appearance.
St. Benedict’s grade 10 goalkeeper Zoe Brown was named to the all-star team, while grade 12 defender Samara Douma was named from Woodland Christian.
