WATERLOO REGION (February 29, 2024) – On Thursday at RIM Park in Waterloo, both the St. David’s girls hockey team and Monsignor Doyle boys hockey team, completed undefeated seasons and secured their spot at CWOSSA Championships next week.

It was six in a row for a St. David’s team that has aspirations of repeating their gold medal performance at A/AA CWOSSA and A/AA OFSAA championships. In the District 8 Championship, the Celtics skated past Monsignor Doyle to a 7-0 win on goals from Megan Bell (2), Lilly Bell (2), Naomi Dupuis, Addison Tillich and Olivia Weiss. Makenna Kroetsch posted the shutout for St. David.

A/AA CWOSSA will take place March 4-5 in Simcoe, and the top two teams will advance to A/AA OFSAA championship in Brooklin, Ontario March 19-21. Monsignor Doyle will advance to the girls triple-A CWOSSA Championships in Kitchener.

In the District 8 Boys championship, Monsignor Doyle secured their first back-to-back hockey championship only one year after winning their first boys hockey title in school history. In the regular season, Monsignor Doyle finished with a perfect ten-win, zero-loss season, scoring 44 more goals than they allowed.

In game one of the best-of-three final series, Monsignor Doyle and Resurrection were deadlocked at four goals each entering the third period. The flood gates opened for the Mustangs in the third frame where they potted eight goals to win 12-4.

In game two, Monsignor Doyle scored the only goal in the third period to tie the game at four, pushing the decision to overtime. With time winning down in the extra frame, Nathan Cunninghan recovered the puck deep in the Resurrection zone and potted the unassisted championship winner.

Monsignor Doyle now advances to the AAA CWOSSA championship in Elmira, March 4-5, while St. David’s will represent District 8 at the A/AA championship in Simcoe.
