WATERLOO REGION (May 24, 2024) – On Thursday, District 8 crowned their first senior boys’ rugby champion in eight years.
Rockway Mennonite Collegiate topped Monsignor Doyle in a game that included multiple lead changes. By the final whistle, the Flames collected the gold with a 23-19 win.
Rockway will advance to the A/AA CWOSSA Championship beginning May 27th in Shelburne, while the Mustangs will play in the triple-A event in Kitchener.
The day prior, on a windy pitch in Kitchener, the Resurrection girls’ soccer team repeated as District 8 champions with a 5-0 win over St. Mary’s. McKenna Campbell-Turkalj scored two goals for the Phoenix and Clara Makemdjeu Jemetio, Danielle Bortmes and Selena Dahkour each scored one. Skylar Morales posted the shutout.
With two triple-A entries for District 8, both Resurrection and St. Mary’s will advance to triple-A CWOSSA on May 28th in Kitchener. St. David’s will advance to the double-A championship in Brantford, while Père-René-de-Galinée will play for back-to-back gold medals at single-A CWOSSA.
The St. Mary’s senior boys team reclaimed the District 8 title with a 5-2 win over Resurrection. Cristian Panameno scored a pair of goals for the Eagles, while Evan Antolcic, Chris Jackson and Quintin Gomez each scored one. Matteo Grant and Treasure Imuzeze scored for Resurrection.
St. Mary’s will advance to the triple-A CWOSSA Championship starting May 27th in Kitchener, St. David’s will play in the double-A Championship in Brantford, while Woodland will play in the single-A Championship in Hillsburgh.
