WATERLOO REGION (May 22, 2015) – On Thursday Resurrection Catholic Secondary School completed a Spring season in a way that may never be seen again. All three of their major Spring teams completed an undefeated District 8 regular and postseason.

The Resurrection girls rugby team faced Monsignor Doyle in the first championship match-up of the day. The Phoenix squad controlled play early, scoring within the first five minutes of the match. Soon after, Resurrection extended the lead to 12-0 with a try from Maddy Antwi that was converted by Bianca Allain. After pouring in four more tries from Rachel Engel, Bianca Allain and Bazi Maryo, the Phoenix team completed their undefeated season with a 36-5 win.

The Resurrection girls rugby team will advance to the AAA/AAAA CWOSSA championships starting Monday May 25th at John F. Ross C.V.I. in Guelph. Their first match kicks off at 12:00pm against Centre Wellington.

The girls soccer final saw undefeated Resurrection take on a tough and athletic St. Mary’s Eagles team. Each of these teams only conceded five goals in six regular season matches. MaKenna Edessi of St. Mary’s opened the scoring early in the first half, and they maintained their momentum until a late first half goal from Resurrection. The Eagles goalie made outstanding saves throughout the second frame, but could not withstand the barrage of offence from the Phoenix. Resurrection’s Sam Code and Emily Buttinger would each score in the second half while their striker Rachel Voisin scored her second of the match to seal the victory 4-1.

This team must now play a CWOSSA qualifying match against Assumption C.S. from Brantford. This match will kick off at 3:00pm on Monday May 25th at Woodside Park in Kitchener. The Girls AAAA CWOSSA Championships will take place May 28 & 29 at RIM Park in Waterloo. St. David’s girls team, despite losing a close game to St. Mary’s in the semi-finals, will host a AAA CWOSSA qualifying match on Monday against Orangeville’s Westside S.S. at 4:00pm.

The highly anticipated boys final between Resurrection and Monsignor Doyle was not the defensive battle they had in their week two, 1-1 draw. The well controlled Phoenix team scored two goals in the first ten minutes and added three more before halftime. Resurrection’s top goal scorer was Ryan Wiltshire who potted two goals, and was a consistent ball handler throughout the match. The final result was a 7-0 victory for the Phoenix.

Resurrection’s boys soccer team must also play a CWOSSA qualification match against Assumption on Monday. This match will kick off at 2:00pm at Assumption in Brantford. The AAAA CWOSSA Championships will take place May 27 & 28 at Woodside Park in Kitchener. Monsignor Doyle will look to bounce back in their AAA CWOSSA qualification match against Westside on Monday at 2:30pm at St. David’s.
