D8 SWIMMING: Saints swim to take the overall team title

WATERLOO REGION (December 20, 2018) – On Wednesday the St. Benedict’s girls swim team dominated in the pool winning the girls team title, and helped win the overall title.

The open swimmers from St. Benedict’s were the leaders in the pool as they swept their podium. Lauren Mage took the open girls gold medal winning all three of her freestyle distance events. Teammates Charlotte Jones and Shaunna Walker deJong finished in a tie for second place while Kyanna Vi finished fourth in the division for the Saints.

Père-René-De-Galinée entered District 8 swimming for the first time and had a very strong showing. Chevalier open swimmer Lazar Paroski won the gold medal as he won the 100M freestyle, 200M individual medley and finished second in the 100M backstroke. Resurrection’s Brayden Van De Wynckel won the silver medal, while St. David’s Ben Chandler won the bronze.

In the senior boys division, Jun Park from St. David’s won the 50M freestyle, 100M freestyle and 50M butterfly where he swam OFSAA qualifying times in all three events. Fellow Celtic Noah Betic and St. Benedict’s Jason Gancena finished in a tie for the silver medal in the division.

St. David’s Katie Hinsperger swam three CWOSSA qualifying times, winning the 50M butterfly, 50M freestyle and 100M individual medley to take the division gold medal. Victoria Joseph finished with the silver medal, while Hannah Beesley won the bronze for St. David’s.

Emma Hillier from Resurrection won the 50M backstroke, 100M freestyle and 100M individual medley to win the junior girls gold. St. Benedict’s Ashley Gould won the silver medal while teammate Marisa Fewster and St. Mary’s Elizabeth Nigh tied for bronze.

In the junior boys division, Patrick Benest won the 50M breaststroke, 100M freestyle and 100M individual medley for Resurrection as he collected the gold medal. Markus Pusztahegyi from St. Mary’s won the silver medal helping the Eagles win the boys team title. Teammate Jonathan McGrath and Resurrection’s Andrew Pedro won the bronze.

All individual event winners along with all swimmers who posted CWOSSA qualification times will advance to the CWOSSA Championships being held February 20, 2019 at the Wilmot Recreation Centre.
