WATERLOO REGION (April 1, 2019) – On Monday, District 8 announced that St. Benedict’s grade 12 middle Gigi Markotic was named the league’s most valuable player.

Markotic and her Saints finished their regular season with a perfect 10-0 record and went 2-0 in the playoffs to win their second straight District 8 title.

Markotic and the Saints, along with first team all-stars, grade 12 left side Olivia Benzin and grade 11 libero Makayla Raymond, battled at the triple-A CWOSSA championship but were unable to overcome Forest Heights who went on to win the tournament.

Led by first team all-star, grade 11 power Olivia Holness, Père-René-de-Galinée finished with their best D8 record in the last four years, and captured a single-A CWOSSA gold medal and OFSAA bronze medal. Alliyah Rowe from PRDG was recognized as a second team all-star.

Resurrection has three grade twelves that were recognized as D8 all-stars. Setter Calista Grant and middle Abby Boorsma were named to the first team for the second straight year, while libero Chloe Bugdale was named to the second team.

Grade 12 setter Nicole Hellinga from Woodland rounds out first team all-star selections, and teammate Kristine Liu was recognized with second team honours.

Grade 12 middles Victoria Jensen from St. David’s and Maya Morton Ninomiya from Rockway, along with St. Mary’s grade 12 right side Nicole Krasnopolski were named as second team all-stars.
