WATERLOO REGION (April 12, 2022) – On Tuesday District 8 announced Kamryn Szumlinski as the most valuable player in the girls hockey league.
Szumlinski helped the Celtics to an undefeated District 8 season, capped off with a 5-0 win in the championship game, where she assisted on four of her team’s five goals.
“Kamryn displays outstanding individual and teamwork skills which compliment her work ethic,” said Rebecca Hall, St. David’s hockey coach. “She is a key contributor on the ice but also off as her leadership abilities and personality portray a real love for hockey. Her positive energy does not go unnoticed.”
Joining Szumlinksi as a first team all-star is teammate Lilly Bell. As a blue liner, the grade 10 Bell scored a hat-trick in the D8 final to help secure the undefeated season. Fellow Celtics, grade 10 forward Megan Bell, and grade 11 forward Carlene Johnson were named as second team all-stars.
Resurrection’s Aiko Prpic was voted as a first team league all-star in helping Resurrection secure the silver medal, while her teammates, forwards Maggie MacDonald and Sarah Schnarr were voted to the second team.
Grade 12 forward Rylee Crego led the Mustangs in scoring in the 2021-22 season including a hat-trick in a game against St. Mary’s in December. This is her second time being named as a District 8 first team all-star in girls hockey as she was named to the team in the 2019-2020 season as a grade 10. Crego’s teammate, Isabella Pereira was voted as a second team all-star on defence.
Alison Staples, a grade 12 forward from St. Benedict’s was named to the first team, and teammate Chloe Gulyas was named to the second team as the lone goalie selected in the 2021-2022 season.
St. Mary’s High School’s Gillian Rovers was a second team selection in 2019-2022 and this year was voted as a first team all-star selection.
