WATERLOO REGION (June 9, 2016) – St. Mary’s senior students Pride Nkomo and Kyndra Miller were each given the nod for boys’ and girls’ rugby respectively.

Nkomo let the boys’ to an undefeated season, where they were able to defeat Resurrection to claim the District 8 championship. It was a remarkable season for the boys’ as they dominated almost every game and did not seem to feel the pressure of completing their perfect season. Miller led the St. Mary’s girls’ team all the way to the District 8 finals, before being defeated by Resurrection in a hard-fought championship game. The Eagles played incredibly hard in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions all season and that reflected in the All-Star teams.

Joining Nkomo were some of his teammates from the championship winning Eagles. Including grade 12’s, Jacob LeBlanc, Craig Ryan, Jack Burdey and rounding out the list of St. Mary’s All-Stars was Noah Ross. From Rockway, the second-seeded regular-season team it was another group of seniors added to the All-Stars, as Jesse Reusser, Nathan Hebel and Eric Dixon of the Flames were named. From the team that made it all the way to the finals, Resurrection, four players were named All-Stars. Grade 12’s, Juan Almada and Kyle Vyrostko were added, along with grade 11’s, Joey Herrera and Tommy Onuska. St. Benedict’s also had three grade 11’s named as Graham Sheppard, Nick Stainsby and Nicholas Leonardo were selected to represent the Saints.

Joining Miller on the girls All-Star team were several of her teammates from St. Mary’s. The Eagles selected were, Grade 12’s Sarah De Amorim and Sarah Mask, followed by grade 11’s Makenna Edissi and Anna Pelczar. Representing the District 8 champions Resurrection Phoenix were seniors, Regina Farkas, Marlene Melo, Nicole da Silva-Pinto and juniors Kara Howitt and Armelle Folefack. Selected from the Celtics were grade 12 Cara Anderson, Grade 10’s Grace Condon, Maren Hale, Jacklyne Pidgeon, and the only freshman to be named an All-Star Dania Ernst.
