WATERLOO, Ont. (October 2 2013) – The Resurrection Phoenix captured the District 8 open tennis championship on Wednesday at Northfield Racquet & Fitness Club claiming the overall title with 21 points while St. David’s finished second with 14.

Resurrection would also claim the girls title posting 13.5 points while St. Benedict’s placed second with five points with St. Mary’s and St. David’s finishing third and fourth respectively. In the boys overall title, St. David’s topped the Phoenix earning a total of 11.5 points while Resurrection placed second with seven and a half points.

Although District 8 had operated tennis championships in the past, this was the first time it had awarded an open title after the association made the decision to combine both junior and senior championships last June. The decision was made to improve the overall caliber of play during the championships.

In individual results Ashleigh Brimo from St. Benedict’s and Oleh Sydorczak of St. David’s took home the girls and boys singles titles respectively. It marked the third time Brimo, a grade 11 student at St. Benedict’s, had earned a D8 tennis title having won the senior event two years prior. It was Sydorczan’s second consecutive title as he won the senior boys singles event last season.

Resurrection’s Brittany Nguyen and Claudia Martin secured the girls doubles title defeating Phoenix teammates Kylee Martin and Erin Voisin 7-1. Resurrection’s Ryan MacLean and Sean Begy earned a 7-0 victory over Josh Reed and Tyler Verutis of St. David to win the boys doubles title while Resurrection’s Gabi Cortes and Jamie Tran earned the mixed doubles title over St. Mary’s Ezio Vanegas and Makayla Gomes in a thrilling 9-7 (tiebreaker) match.

All champions from today’s event will look to contend next week at the Central Western Ontario (CWOSSA) championship held October 11 at Northfield Racquet & Fitness Club.
