WATERLOO REGION (October 2, 2015) – On Wednesday the District 8 Tennis Championships were decided with St. Mary’s High School claiming their first overall tennis championship.
St. Mary’s also took home the boys division championship while St. David’s Catholic Secondary School repeated as girls overall champions.
It was an all St. Mary’s affair in the boys doubles final as Valintine Idomir and Alex Idomir defeated their St. Mary’s classmates Norbert Ujvari and Kevin Bui 6-3. The pairing of Gavin McLeod and Noah Monteiro of St. Benedict’s finished third.
Kevin Pham of St. Mary’s was unable to attain the clean sweep for the St. Mary’s boys has he was defeated by Resurrection’s Kristian Copic in the boys singles final 6-0. Mark Cooper of St. Benedict’s finished third.
In mixed doubles, partners Ryan MacLean and Mia Tamindzija from Resurrection captured gold defeating St. Mary’s Ezio Vanegas and Nancy Wu. Josh Malagaya and Deborah Edwards also of St. Mary’s would finish third in the division.
St. David’s Gabriella Hudec would capture gold in girls singles 6-0 over St. Benedict’s Sarah Sue-Ping. Hudec’s teammate, Olivia Szczepanek. would finish in third.
Grade tens Sarah Helsby and Jessie Bauer would also capture the girls doubles title for St. David’s. They would top the St. Mary’s pairing of Christie Downey and Makayla Gomes in the final 6-4. Brittany Mendes and Karen Hakim of St. Mary’s would finish third.
Winners of each division will advance to CWOSSA Championships held Friday October 9th at Northfield Racquet Club in Waterloo.
