WATERLOO REGION (June 8, 2015) – On Monday District 8 Athletics Association released their Spring season most valuable players and all-star candidates.

Resurrection Catholic Secondary School’s Celia McGlynn was the clear MVP selection for the girls soccer season. McGlynn lead the Phoenix to an undefeated D8 season capturing gold over St. Mary’s High School. Next year, McGlynn will be pursuing a degree at the University of Western Ontario while competing for the Mustangs varsity soccer team.

Joining McGlynn as all-stars are here Phoenix teammates Sammy Code and Steph Penta. D8 Finalists St. Mary’s Eagles added Cheyenne Sexton and Este Montes as all-stars while St. David’s are represented by Abby Howard and Brooke Turkalj. Nicole Nusselder (Woodland), Abby Van Groningen (St. Benedict’s), Sophia Coelho (Monsignor Doyle) and Alex Zonneveld (Père-René-de-Galinée) each represent their schools as D8 girls soccer all-stars.

For the boys soccer selection, it was the hard working, tenacious play from Monsignor Doyle’s Tyler Martin that earned him the most valuable player recognition. Martin potted five goals in D8 play but was unable to will his team past a very talented Resurrection squad.

“Tyler lead by example on and off the field,” said coach Burt Bizony. “He is always thinking and adapting and was not afraid to question and give insight to players and coaches.”

Martin hopes to pursue a post-secondary athletic scholarship south of the border.

Joining Martin on the all-star roster is teammate Jamie Wilkinson who scored three goals in the D8 season.

The D8 and AAAA-CWOSSA champion Resurrection Phoenix are represented by Jay Gomes, Sean Linstrum and Ryan Wiltshire on the all-star team. Wiltshire lead his squad with 10 D8 goals which included five goals in the team’s first regular season game.

St. Benedict’s is represented by Andrew Agger and his teammate Johnny Cabral who scored 9 goals for the Saints. Michael Halapir (St. Mary’s), Caleb Isaacs (Woodland), Karim Mohamed (St. David’s) and Richard Forgaty (Père-René-de-Galinée) each represent their schools as D8 boys soccer all-stars.

The girls District 8 rugby season was dominated by Resurrection and as a result, their team leader Bianca Allain was awarded the league’s most valuable player title.

Allain was a leader on and off the field as the back scoring nine tries in seven games and also converted many tries as the Phoenix place kicker. Joining Allain on the all-star team are her Resurrection teammates Britney Haughton, Regina Fareas, Kara Howitt and Monique Mery.

Monsignor Doyle who upset St. Mary’s in the semi-final but couldn’t overcome the speed and power of the Resurrection team are represented by Kelly Stockall, Brittany Melo, Hannah Aitchison and Haylee Keleher. Kelly Stockall lead the Mustangs with seven tries on the season.

Madison Bedard, Kyndra Miller and Taylor Near represent the St. Mary’s Eagles as all-stars, while Jamie Simons, Maren Hale and Keira Publicover represent the St. David’s Celtics.
