WATERLOO REGION (October 26, 2015) – As OFSAA defending Champions, winning District 8 should have been a foregone conclusion for the Phoenix field hockey squad.

Resurrection would face St. David’s in the final who they tied 2-2 earlier in the year, and most recently beat 4-0.

Thursday’s final took place on St. David’s field and began with a great deal of ball control by the Phoenix with St. David’s making short and powerful brakes toward the Resurrection net.

Resurrection had a number of scoring opportunities in the first half from Emily Buttinger, Rebecca Vitello and Jennifer Bean all of which were foiled by the Celtics standout goalie Marley Dowling.

Dowling would continue to hold the game scoreless, stopping shot after shot until midway through the second half when midfielder Rebecca Vitello would sneak one home for the game’s only goal. The Phoenix would maintain the majority of the ball possession for the remainder of the game taking the gold medal.

Resurrection will now look toward CWOSSA Championships October 28th and 29th at Woodside Park in Kitchener. This tournament is one of the hardest roads to qualify for OFSAA, as a CWOSSA entry has won the last five OFSAA championships, four by Resurrection and one by WCSSAA’s Sir John A. MacDonald.
