WATERLOO REGION (April 19, 2022) – Last week, District 8 Badminton was held for the first time in three years and Woodland Christian High School collected the junior, senior and overall team titles.
It was an all Woodland final in the senior boys singles event as Patrick Kooy won the gold medal over teammate Dave Fan who collected the silver. Resurrection’s Brayden Van De Wynckel won the bronze.
Partners Ruari Adams and Kaylee Chapman also won gold for Woodland in the senior girls double competition, and teammates Paulie Warkentin and Makenna Adams won the bronze. St. Mary’s pairing of Gillian Rovers Sierra Sutton won the silver medal.
In the senior girls singles draw, St. Mary’s Araceli Kaun won gold over Julia Prince from Resurrection who finished with the silver medal. The bronze went to Celina Gregorio from Monsignor Doyle.
Joel Kayyalakam and Issay Tieu from St. Benedict’s won the senior boys double event defeating Rockway’s Stefan Fieguth and Sam Dominy in the final. Adam Cekan and partner Zachary Mathews from Monsignor Doyle won the bronze.
St. Benedict’s also took home gold in the senior mixed double event, won by Caleb Hamilton and Rachel Anderson. Woodland’s Gabe VanderHoef and Jess Dirkse won the silver medal and Rockway’s Owen Unrau and Adrienne Enns won the bronze.
In the junior championships Woodland won the team event led by Trisha Kooy-Velazquez who won gold in junior girls singles.
Monsignor Doyle took home three gold medals including Anton Grasso in junior boys singles, Holly Fritz and Alia Lloyd in junior girls doubles and Martin Cekan and Ava Costa in junior mixed doubles.
The junior boys doubles gold went to Breden Biber and Matt Van De Wynckel from Resurrection.
All qualifiers will advance to the CWOSSA championships held April 20th (junior) and 21st (senior) in Brantford. .
