WATERLOO REGION (April 10, 2015) – On Thursday, Monsignor Doyle repeated as the overall District 8 badminton champions, making this their 24th title in 25 years.

Doyle’s most outstanding senior performance came from boys singles player Tom Brodhaeker who won all his matches including the gold medal match against Rockway’s Eric Grierson.

Kristine Boileau of Père-René-de-Galinée captured gold over Kristine Wu from Rockway on the ladies side of the draw.

The remainder of senior competitions were dominated by Woodland Christian who would capture their third straight senior team badminton championship. The boys doubles team of Spencer Carrick and Brendan Vandergeest, and the ladies doubles team of Mariah Jolin and Melena Lagana both won all their matches on the way to first place finishes. The Woodland mixed doubles team of Drew Carrick and Julia DeWeerd would also capture gold.

The junior team competition scoring was dominated by Monsignor Doyle despite only winning one gold on the day. This loan gold medal came from girls singles player Abbey McLeman.

Junior boys singles champion Nicholas Pehme and boys doubles champions Colin Reid and Ryan MacLean contributed points for Resurrection as the Phoenix team finished second in the junior team scoring.

The girls doubles title was captured by the St. Benedict’s pairing of Michelle Nguyen and Emily Soares.

It was an all St. Mary’s affair in the junior mixed doubles final as the team of Courtney Higgins and Norbert Ujvari won gold over their Eagle teammates.

All first and second place finishers from the District 8 championships will advance to the CWOSSA championships. The junior CWOSSA championships will be held on April 15th, while the senior draw will be held on the 16th at RIM Park in Waterloo.
