D8 Badminton: Team titles swept by Woodland

WATERLOO REGION (April 17, 2023) – Last week, District 8 Badminton was held at the University of Waterloo, where Woodland Christian High School swept the junior, senior and overall championship titles. 

It was an all Woodland senior girls singles final where Grace Guo won gold over teammate Carly Byma who took home the silver. Resurrection’s Megan Squire.

Woodland also won gold medals in boys doubles with the team of Josh Hayhoe and Brett Koetsier and girls doubles with Ruari Adams and Kaylee Chapman.

Last year’s junior boys champion Anton Grasso, now in grade 11, won the senior boys singles title over Woodland’s Dave Fan who finished with a silver. Noah Cantin from Père-René-de-Galinée won the bronze.

The mixed doubles pair of Alex Willem and Martin Cekan won the gold double for Monsignor Doyle over the Woodland pair of Julia Hiller and Cam DeVries.

In the junior division, Woodland took home gold medals in the girls singles division, won by Trisha Kooy-Velazquez over Theodora Dragan from Père-René-de-Galinée, and in mixed doubles won by Lucas Jonker and Sienna Rowe.

The junior boys singles title was won by Asher Pocsai from Père-René-de-Galinée who topped Derick Groot from Woodland.

The junior boys double title went to the St. Benedict pair of Arham Sazid and Alvin Siju, topping the silver medalists from Rockway, Mateo Castano and Toby Snider.

Monsignor Doyle’s pair of Alia Lloyd and Marissa Mattson won the junior girls double gold medal over Rockway’s Ella Umar and Julia Bingaman.
