WATERLOO REGION (April 14, 2023) – On Friday, District 8 announced that Evan Palubeski from St. Mary’s High School was named the most valuable player in boys hockey.

Palubeski, a grade 12 forward, helped lead the Eagles to the top seed in the regular season with nine wins and one loss that came in a shootout. Through thirteen District 8 games in the 2022-23 season, Palubeski scored 15 goals and one shootout goal.

“When the team was asked for nominees for captaincy, several of the boys replied ‘isn’t it obvious’”, said St. Mary’s hockey coach Jon Symanyk.  “Evan’s skill level was above and beyond as he scored goals and set up his teammates regularly.  He even scored a goal during a close game versus St. Benedict when he set up behind the net and scored a ‘Michigan style’ goal. Evan also helped off the ice with game sheets and pregame speeches this past year.”

Joining Palubeski from St. Mary’s as all-stars on the second team are a pair of grade 12 teammates, Will Mathers who played forward and Liam O’Leary between the posts.

The only team to have St. Mary’s number this year was an energetic and well organized Monsignor Doyle team led by first team all-stars Aiden Goias and Aidan Singh. Goias tallied 16 goals in 13 games and Singh added six. Mustang teammate Jack Whibbs was named as a second team all-star.

Grade 11 centre Griffin Beddis was named a first team selection from Resurrection scoring five goals, while teammate defenceman Toby Pryce was named to the second team.

St. Benedict is represented by grade 12 centre Carson MacDonald as a first team all-star and second team selection, Grade 12 forward Cole Dwyer.

Goaltender Jake Wingrove was named as a first team all-star from St. David, and teammate Ryan Beckner was named to the second team.
