D8 CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK: Finals are set for most District 8 teams

WATERLOO REGION (February 11, 2016) – The biggest week in District 8 Championship history is about to begin with nine champions being crowned in four days.

For the first year ever District 8 will award a girls hockey championship within a best of three series format. Game one will take place on February 11th when St. David’s will play host to rival Resurrection at RIM Park in Waterloo at 3:00pm. Game two will go February 16th while game three, if necessary, will take place February 18th. All games will be played at RIM Park.

Boys Hockey has come back to District 8 after a 19 year absence. St. David’s who is the defending champion from the 1995-1996 season was unable to get to the final after a stunning overtime loss to Resurrection in the semi-final. The Phoenix will be taking on St. Benedict’s at Galt Arena in game one on February 11th at 2:30pm. Game two will shift to RIM Park on February 16th where the puck will drop at 3:00pm, and if a game three is required, it will be played at Hespeler Arena on February 18th at 2:30pm.

The senior girls volleyball final is set for Wednesday February 17th at 8:00pm where Woodland will play host to St. Mary’s who upset Resurrection in a five set nail biter on Wednesday. St. Mary’s junior squad in play in the final against St. Benedict’s at 6:00pm as a prequel to the senior match up.

The senior boys basketball final is set for February 19th but the contestants have yet to be set. In the first semi-final, undefeated St. Benedict’s will host St. David’s on February 17th at 4:30pm. On the other side of the draw, St. Mary’s seniors will host Resurrection at 5:00pm. The junior semi-finals will see St. David’s at St. Mary’s at 3:30pm and Resurrection at St. Benedict’s at 3:00pm.

The basketball finals on February 19th will lead off with the midget boys final at 4:00pm, followed by the juniors at 6:00pm and the seniors at 8:00pm. The venue will be determined by the highest ranked senior team remaining in the playoffs.

On Tuesday the first ever District 8 curling title will be awards for boys and girls. The finals are set to begin at 3:45pm at Galt Curling Club between St. Benedict’s and St. Mary’s in both the boys and girls divisions.
