WRESTLING: Monsignor Doyle and St. Mary’s crowned wrestling champions

WATERLOO REGION (January 15, 2016) – On Thursday, District 8 held their first ever championship wrestling event since splitting with WCSSAA in the Fall. Despite the split, a similar champion emerged as the Monsignor Doyle kicked off their D8 campaign doing what the boys wrestling program is accustomed to doing, winning. Joining the boys on the top of the podium is the girl’s St. Mary’s team capturing the D8 girls title.

Monsignor Doyle’s boys team was led by gold medal performances from Alex Amaral (47.5kg), Andres Montes (51kg), Liam Cobb (54kg), Curtis Pys (61kg), Brandon Wood (64kg), Bahnam Sabah (67.5kg), Jeff Rideout (72kg), Madison Kooting (77kg), Donte Vassallo (83kg), Messias Legere-Costa (89kg), Braden Bickford (95kg) and Lucas Rosa (130kg).

St Mary’s girls team collected golds in five of ten weight classes which included wins by Alex Montes (47.5kg), Estevana Montes (51kg), Abigail Adamczyk (57.5kg), Sierra Baxter (61kg) and Allexandria Pilkington (67.5kg). The St. Mary’s boys team also picked up a gold medal performances from Kadeen Campbell (57.5kg).

St. David’s who finished just 15 points behind St. Mary’s had four wrestlers earn a gold including Olivia Cruz (54kg), Laura Runstedler (64kg), Jocelyn Orellana (72kg) and Cara Anderson (83kg). The boys from St. David’s also finished second in their division collecting gold medals by Carson Kemple (38kg) and Eric Boutcher (44kg).

St. Benedict’s finished third in the girls division with a gold medal effort from Rebecca Quigley.

The wrestling season will continue on February 11th at St. David’s for the CWOSSA qualification event with WCSSAA in which the top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to CWOSSA on February 19th in Brantford.
