D8 CWOSSA PREVIEW: Teams to watch this week

WATERLOO REGION (November 15, 2023) – A number of teams within District 8 have claimed their entries into this week’s CWOSSA Championship events being hosted across central western Ontario. 

On Tuesday night Woodland Christian captured the senior girls basketball championship over St. Mary’s 67-32, finishing their District 8 campaign in undefeated fashion. Kaylee Chapman led in scoring with 21 points for the Cavaliers, while teammate Bree Drost added 15. St. Mary’s Lily Jones led the Eagles with 13 points. 

Woodland CHS – Senior Girls Basketball

Woodland will advance to and host the single-A CWOSSA championship on November 17th. St. Mary’s will represent District 8 at the triple-A CWOSSA championship in Guelph, while St. David’s will compete in the double-A championship in Cambridge. 

In junior basketball action, St. Benedict’s squeezed past Resurrection 40-35 to claim their third junior girls basketball title in as many years. Victoria Riordon led the Saints with 15 points while Mya Gallagher scored 14 for Resurrection.

The Saints junior girls squad will march into triple-A CWOSSA where they’re in a pool against Owen Sound and the second place team from WCSSAA. St. David’s juniors advance to the double-A championship while the junior squad from Woodland will play in the single-A event. 

In senior boys volleyball it was Père-René-de-Galinée who made an epic run to retain their District 8 title from last fall. After dropping the first two sets to St Benedict (24-26 and 14-25), Les Chevaliers stormed back to win the next three sets (25-21, 25-22 and 15-8). 

ESC Père-René-de-Galinée – Senior Boys Volleyball

Père-René-de-Galinée will enter the single-A CWOSSA championship looking to qualify for the OFSAA tournament for the second straight year. Rockway Mennonite who finished as the top seed after the regular season failed to qualify for CWOSSA, but have already punched their ticket to the single-A OFSAA Championships as the host and last year’s silver medalists. St. Benedict will play in the triple-A CWOSSA Championship beginning November 16th at RIM Park in Waterloo while St. David will play in the double-A event in Hanover. 

The junior squad from St. Benedict won back-to-back District 8 volleyball championships after they topped St. David in the final three sets to one (21-25, 30-28, 25-8, 28-26).

St. Benedict will join their senior squad at triple-A CWOSSA in Waterloo while St. David’s will play for the double-A title in Hanover. Père-René-de-Galinée finished as the top single-A team and will host the single-A championship on November 16th where Woodland will also compete as District 8’s second entry. 

After winning a defensive battle in the District 8 Championship 6-5, followed by 38-0 shutout of St. Mary’s of Owen Sound in the CWOSSA quarterfinal, Resurrection will play Laurel Heights SS on November 16th in the CWOSSA semi-final. The Phoenix are looking to make their second straight appearance in the CWOSSA title game.

The Junior Resurrection Phoenix football team captured their seventh title in eight seasons with a 48-7 win over St. Benedict.
