WATERLOO REGION (December 12, 2023) – On Tuesday, District 8 announced that Drew Targosz would receive the Father Mike Award as the most valuable player in senior football.
The grade 12 Targosz played on both sides of the ball throughout the season lining up at running back on offence and linebacker on defence. While continually delivering important tackles for the Phoenix defence, Targosz also made the biggest difference in the District 8 championship, scoring the game’s only touchdown.
“He was a strong defensive presence for us in every game and his defensive playmaking was always timely,” said Resurrection’s senior football coach Matthew Gallagher when talking about Targosz. “Drew carried the offensive load for us in our second game against St. Mary’s and our D8 championship win against St. Benedict. He continually made big run after big run when we needed it most.”
Resurrection had four other grade 12 players named as first team all-stars, all of whom played on both sides of the ball. Like Targosz, Tyson Oliu and Raygan Schwind also lined up running back and linebacker making large impacts all season.
Riley Webster rarely exited the field for the Phoenix playing both wide receiver and defensive back, and also punted and returned kicks at various times of the season. Aidan Conway rounds out the first team all-star selections for Resurrection as he spearheaded the offensive and defensive lines.

Alex Pauletic from St. Benedict was named as a first team all-star as one of the top interior linemen on offence and defence. Paulitic plans to take his talents to the next level in 2024 with the Laurier Golden Hawks. Joining Pauletic as a first team all-star is fellow Saints lineman Luke Bales.
St. Benedict also named running back Brian Amoakohene and quarterback Brayden Ryan as first team all-stars. Amoakohene and Ryan each accounted for three touchdowns on the season.
Defensive end Sebastian Curicheru and linebacker Matt Totzke were named as first team all-stars from St. Mary’s on the defensive side of the ball while Brayden Hastie represented the Eagles as a first team selection on offence.
