D8 GIRLS HOCKEY: MVP nod goes to Mustangs’ Julia Papalia

WATERLOO REGION (April 10, 2024) – District 8 announced their all-star rosters from the girl’s hockey season on Wednesday, with Julia Papalia from Monsignor Doyle headlining as the most valuable player. 

The Mustangs battled all season against tough competition with Papalia headlining as the team’s top goal scorer. The grade 11 centre scored 17 goals in 13 games including three hat tricks. 

“The coaching staff at Monsignor Doyle nominated Julia Papalia based on her ability to produce a significant number of points and her exceptional leadership both on and off the ice,” said Shawn Rosario, coach of Monsignor Doyle. “Julia is very disciplined, has a high hockey IQ and possesses a growth mindset. This is why she was selected as team captain which she humbly accepted and proudly represented Monsignor Doyle by honouring the game of hockey and her opponents with dignity and respect.”

Papalia is joined on the all-star team by second team nominations; Grade 12 Emilia Santos on defence and Grade 12 forward Mackenzie Willem. 

After St. David’s collected their sixth straight District 8 gold medal, first team all-star selections Megan Bell and Lily Bell led the Celtics to a double-A CWOSSA silver medal and an A/AA silver at OFSAA. Megan, a Grade 12 forward, led the league in goals with 22 in 14 games, while Lily added eight from the blue line. 

Celtics’ second team all-star, Grade Nine forward Emma McCoubrey, scored ten goals in her rookie high school hockey season while also tallying five assists in a single game. St. David’s is also represented by Grade Ten Olivia Weiss on the second team squad. 

Resurrection’s Grade 12 goaltender Skyla Soehner was named as a first team all-star recording one shoutout on the season. She is joined by teammate and second team all-star Delaney Collins. 

The defensive pairing of Sylvie Legault and Orla Hayes from St. Benedict were named as District 8 all-stars. Grade 12 Legault was named to the first team while Grade 11 Hayes was named to the second team. 

St. Mary’s Grade 10 forward Caitlin Sonneman was named as a first team all-star for the Eagles, scoring six goals in ten games, including one hat trick.
