D8 SWIMMING: Resurrection claims overall team championship

WATERLOO REGION (December 22, 2022) – On Wednesday, Resurrection swam their way to capture the District 8 overall team title, led by three individual swimmers who won their divisions. 

Avery Routhier earned top spot in the senior girls high school division for Resurrection winning the 100M individual medley, 100M backstroke and 100M breaststroke. Karima Al-Aoussi from Père-René-De-Galinée and Paige Spehar from St. Mary’s tied for second in the division. 

In the senior boys high school division, Matt Van De Wynckel captured the top spot for Resurrection, finishing first in the 50M freestyle, 50M butterfly and 100M breaststroke. A pair of swimmers from St. Mary’s finished second and third in the division; Ryder Monnikendan won the 100M individual medley and the 50M breaststroke to finish second, while teammate Sam Anderson won the 100M freestyle to finish third amongst senior boys.

Resurrection’s Ben Rito split the top spot in the boys open division in a tie with Luc Landry from Père-René-De-Galinée. Rito won the 200M individual medley, 100M freestyle and 100M backstroke, while Landry won the 50M freestyle, 100 individual medley and 100M butterfly. St. Benedict’s Saeed Rasheed finished third in the boys open division. 

St. Mary’s High School took home the boys team championship led by Samson Pusztahegyi who won the junior boys high school division. St. Benedict’s Jake Murray finished second, while Marko Vulpin from Père-René-De-Galinée and Ricardo Cabrera from Resurrection tied for third. 

Alexandra Tole and Kawtar Al-Aoussi helped Père-René-De-Galinée win the girls team title by finishing first and second respectively in the junior girls high school division. Tole won the 50M and 100M freestyle and Al-Aoussi won the 50M backstroke and 100M individual medley. St. Mary’s Lauren Spehar finished third in the junior girls high school division. 

Hailey Murdoch from St. Benedict’s and Willow Coburn from David-Saint-Jaques tied for first place in the open girls division. Murdoch won the 50M freestyle, 100M backstroke and 200M individual medley while Coburn won the 100M individual medley, 100M freestyle and 100M breaststroke. Sara Bulz from Père-René-De-Galinée finished third in the division winning the 200M freestyle and 100M butterfly.
