D8 SWIMMING: Resurrection sweeps three team titles

WATERLOO REGION (December 21, 2023) – On Wednesday, Resurrection collected all three team titles in District 8 swimming while winning four individual category gold medals.  

Mia Tomic won the gold for Resurrection in the girls open division, finishing first in the 100M individual medley, 100M backstroke and 100M freestyle. The silver medal went to Willow Coburn from David-Saint-Jacques who won the 200M individual medley and finished second in two other events while St. David’s Geneva Silva took the bronze, winning the 100M butterfly. 

In the open boys division, Resurrection’s Hercules Cheng and St. Benedict’s Aidan D’Oliveira tied for gold. Cheng finished first in the 200M freestyle, 200M individual medley and 100M butterfly, while D’Oliveira won the 50M and 100M freestyle and the 100M backstroke. Ben Rito from Resurrection collected the open boys bronze medal.

Matt Van De Wynckel from Resurrection won gold in the senior boys high school division with first place finishes in the  50M and 100M breaststroke and the 50M freestyle. St. David’s Ethan Arnold won the 100M individual medley and 100M freestyle to take the silver medal, while Sam Anderson from St. Mary’s won the bronze winning the 200M freestyle event. 

The senior girls gold medal was split between Avery Routhier from Resurrection and Christina Tole from Père-René-De-Galinée, each winning three races. Routhier won the 100M backstroke, 100M breaststroke and 100M individual medley, while Tole swept the 50M, 100M and 200M freestyle races. St. Benedict’s Caitlin Thompson took the bronze winning the 50M butterfly. 

There was another gold medal tie in the junior girls high school division between Alexandrea Tole from Père-René-De-Galinée and Rayah Phonprasith from St. Benedict. Phonprasith won the 50M freestyle and the 50M breaststroke. Tole won the 50M backstroke and the 100M freestyle while her teammate Kawtar Al-Aoussi took the bronze, winning the 100M individual medley. 

Scott Godkin won the gold for St. Mary’s in the junior boys high school division winning the 50M breaststroke and 100M individual medley. Owen Darcey and Logan Choi won the silver and bronze medal respectively for Resurrection.
