D8 SWIMMING: Saints swim their way to the overall team title

WATERLOO REGION (March 10, 2022) – On Tuesday the St. Benedict’s girls swim team lead the way to their fourth title in five years, and help secure the overall team title for the fourth time in school history.   

The Saints were led by girls open division swimmer Jewel Buckley who collected the gold, swimming to three first place finishes in 50M freestyle, 100M freestyle and 100M backstroke. Ashley Gould and Aislinn Mackenzie respectively won the silver and bronze in the senior division for St. Benedicts. Gould won the 200M freestyle and the 100M backstroke, while Mackenzie won the 50M backstroke. 

In the junior girls division, St. Benedict’s Caitlin Thompson won the silver medal winning the 100M individual medley and the 50M butterfly while teammate Nicole Natale won the bronze winning the 50M backstroke. 

Père-René-De-Galinée repeated as team champions in the boys division edging past Resurrection, 149 points to 146. 

Luc Laundy from Père-René-De-Galinée won the boys open division gold medal with wins in the 100M individual medley and 100M butterfly. Teammate Darius Trapsa won the bronze in the open division winning the 100M freestyle. In the senior boys division Lazar Paroski from Père-René-De-Galinée collected the bronze medal with a win in the 50M backstroke and two second place finishes. 

St. Mary’s Paige Spehar won the senior girls division gold medal by winning the 50M and 100M freestyle, and the 50M butterfly. 

Resurrection’s Brayden Van De Wynckel tied for the individual gold medal with St. Benedict’s Zach Thompson. Van De Wynckel won the 100M and 200M freestyle as well as the 100M breaststroke, while Thomspon won the 50M breaststroke, 50M freestyle and 50M butterfly. 

In the junior boys division Matt Van De Wynckel won gold finishing with first place finishes in the 50M breaststroke, 50M freestyle and 50M butterfly. Teammate Nick Beatie finished with the silver medal in the division, while St. Mary’s Sam Anderson won the bronze. 

Christina Tole from Père-René-De-Galinée won the junior girls gold with wins in the 50M and 100M freestyle and the 50M breaststroke.
