WATERLOO REGION (May 29, 2015) – On Friday District 8 released its final list of Academic All-Stars, and for a third straight year, the numbers have increased.
The Academic All-Star award recognizes District 8 student-athletes who have made a contribution, both in their athletics and their academics. Student-athletes who are recognized as an Academic All-Star participate on an inter-school team as well as achieve a minimum average of 85%.
“District 8 schools are focused on developing the complete student-athlete which means succeeding in their sport, as well as in the classroom.” said District 8 President, Chris Woodcroft.
In 2013-14 D8 awarded 602 student-athletes with the Academic All-Star Award which was an increase of 75 from the previous year. In 2014-15 D8 will recognize 639 student-athletes.
In addition to the these awards are the Academic Elite All-Star awards. This award recognizes the top male and female student-athletes in each of the junior and senior categories for every District 8 school. Each nominee has the highest scholastic average among all student-athletes who compete in at least two major sports for their school.
The Academic Elite winners names won’t be released publicly until June so that they can be recognized at each school’s’ athletic banquet.
