KITCHENER, Ont. (April 13, 2012) – The Monsignor Doyle Mustangs claimed an unprecedented 22nd straight District 8 overall badminton championship on Friday at Conestoga College.

The Mustangs secured the overall title by collecting 156 points powered by the play of the junior squad who secured 92 points in the final-day of competition. Resurrection finished in second place overall with 119 points while Woodland was third with 116.

Monsignor Doyle has won every overall crown since the leagues inception in 1990-91 and has also done the same on the junior side. Yesterday, the Mustang’s lost their first senior badminton title finishing just 3 points behind Resurrection in second place.

In Friday’s junior individual results, Monsignor Doyle’s Sebastian Grasso captured the boys single with Woodland’s Drew Carrick earning runner up honours. Angel Riberio of Monsignor Doyle won the girls singles while teammate Sherry Wong was the runner-up.

Liam Dowling and Alejandro Reinosa of St. Mary’s took the boys doubles title besting Resurrection’s Brendan Masters and Kevin Santolini who earned runner-up.

Woodland’s combo of Lizzy Hughes and Logan Schmidt captured the mixed doubles title finishing ahead of Semara Desmeules and Evan Burns of Resurrection. Woodland also captured top position in girlse doubles with the combo of Rachel Guetter and Emily Pidduck. Marianna Turcotte and Becca Bouchey of Monsignor Doyle was runner up in girlse doubles.

The Mustangs picked up the junior crown with 92 points while Woodland was second with 71 points while Resurrection finished third with 52 points.

In Thursday’s senior competition, Resurrection’s Tong Silmai won the senior girlse singles title while Derek Lenos of Woodland Christian HS earned the senior boyse singles title. Mixed doubles was won by Woodland’s Trevor DeWeerd and Katherine Mazereeuw. In girlse doubles Resurrection’s Nichole Burns and Arianna Dufresne claimed the title while the boyse doubles champions were Rockway’s Jon Wong and Micah Brubacher-Zehr.

All eight District-8 schools were represented including Monsignor Doyle CSS, ES Pere-Rene-de-Galinee, Resurrection CSS, Rockway MC, St. Benedict CSS, St. David CSS, St. Mary’s HS, Woodland Christian HS. Also competing in the event was the Koinonia Christian Academy located in Bloomingdale, Ont.

Champions and finalists from each category have qualified for CWOSSA which is set for next April 18 & 19 at Conestoga College. The juniors will play on Wednesday, April 18th while the seniors will compete on Thursday, April 19th.
