WATERLOO REGION (June 27, 2023) – On Tuesday, District 8 announced the all-star teams for the boys’ and girls’ slo-pitch seasons which each featured six teams since the leagues began in the Spring of 2016.
The squad from St. Benedict was able to capture their first girls’ title in school history, led by all-stars Emma Riso, Katie Leudy and Robyn Squires.
That was only the beginning for the Saints who would go on to win the first girls slo-pitch event in CWOSSA history, as well as an appearance at the first ever OFSAA Girls’ Slo-Pitch Festival hosted in Dorchester Ontario.
The Saints cruised through OFSAA pool play, winning all three games, 15-8, 26-6 and 12-5. Despite losing to the eventual OFSAA champion in their semi-final matchup, they were able to rebound and win the OFSAA bronze medal.
St. David’s won the District 8 silver medal, and are represented by all-stars Julianna Merritt at first base, and Paige Steffler who played rover for the Celtics.
St. Mary’s is represented by a pair of grade twelve all-stars who split time at shortstop; Jessica Hunt and Natalie Donelle.
Rounding out the girls all-stars are Angelica Espiritu from Monsignor Doyle, Mariana Ribon Alvarez from Père-René-de-Galinée, and Meghan Wadel from Resurrection.
In the boys league, Resurrection claimed their second back-to-back title since the league’s inaugural season, led by all-stars Jackson Tjart, Kalen Maharaj and Matthew Van De Wynckel. The Phoenix finished first in the regular season with a nine win and one loss record, and captured the gold with a 10-4 win in the Championship.
St. Mary’s High School took home the District 8 silver medal with assistance from grade 12 all-stars Brandon Woroch and Hunter Welk.
Grade 12 outfielders Alec Frias and Travis Nederpelt were named as league all-stars from Monsignor Doyle.
Aiden Weber from St. Benedict, Kalvin Boegel from Père-René-de-Galinée and Owen Brown from St. David round out the boys slo-pitch all-star selections for the 2022-23 season.
